Practical Spirituality

What does practical spirituality look like? How can something be practical and spiritual at the same time? Actually, every step we take, which is guided by God's Spirit, is practical and spiritual and so very effective and efficient.

Let me give you a practical example. We went grocery shopping for the quarter - God's Spirit already led us years ago to do this and to precook our food ASAP and freeze it in order to preserve its freshness and to simplify our meal planning and preparation in the midst of our busy schedule.

So today God's Spirit led me to fill my stainless pot with filtered water and to boil it - adding nine washed eggs to hard-boil for future lunches.

While this was happening, He led me to clean and dice potatoes for the Shepherd's pie, which He led me to make for my husband's supper that night - one of his favorites.

I removed the eggs with a slotted spoon and refrigerated them right away in a bowl filled with cold, filtered water to make them easier to peel. Then He led me to put the diced potatoes into this same boiling water in my stainless pot.

As they bubbled away, He led me to rinse and chop cauliflower into chucks. When the diced potatoes were tender, I drained them into a colander and placed them into the bowl from my mixer along with Parmesan cheese, dairy products and spices.

I used a bottle brush to remove all potato residue (I am allergic to potatoes and the cauliflower was for me to eat) from this same, hot stainless pot and I added fresh filtered water to steam the cauliflower chunks.

I blended the potatoes and spooned them on top of the thawed, browned ground beef that I browned and froze when we shopped last quarter.

Once the cauliflower steamed, I put it in the blender full of filtered water and "riced" it, draining it into a strainer. As they drained, He led me to mince fresh garlic to add to the spices for the cauliflower.

I baked the Shepherd's pie and grated cheese from a block to add in the last few moments of baking. Then God's Spirit led me to put the riced cauliflower in the rinsed mixing bowl from the potatoes and add the ingredients to make seaweed-cauliflower "crackers" for my future meals.

As the cracker mixture took time to "rise", I added cheese to the Shepherd's Pie and melted it in the oven. At this time, He reminded me to grease the cookie sheets to bake the "crackers".

While I served the Shepherd's Pie to my husband for his supper, I baked the "crackers" and then the Spirit led me to make some organic marinara sauce for dipping my "crackers". I froze the extra sauce and "crackers" for future use.

Eating my supper of Asian Cabbage-Seaweed slaw, which I made at the beginning of the week, along with a few of my fresh cauliflower-seaweed "crackers", I took the time to praise God for the clock-work, which His Spirit choreographed in order for me to accomplish all of that cooking in just a little over an hour of time. That is what I mean about practical spirituality.

Since I used only a few pots and bowls during all that meal preparation, I cleaned the kitchen in just a few moments and had plenty of evening time to write this post and read myself to sleep.

Thought for the Day:
It really pays to follow God's Spirit through every moment of the day, especially in the practical areas of life.

Hope and Joy Now and for Eternity

At times, people hear the truth of Christ's gospel, but do not respond to it. It was not mixed with faith and they could not receive it (Hebrews 4:2). We can pray that God will strengthen them in their inner man to accept His Truth as their own (Ephesians 3:16-17).

People often lie to us, in order to keep our good opinion of them, or to keep us from rejecting or not loving them anymore. They are so emotionally depleted or lacking in self-esteem that they cannot risk our reaction if they tell us the truth.

Therefore, they also believe that God's love is conditional; and they reject Him because they think He will abandon them if they are not perfect. This is Satan's lie, which they believe as truth, and they are perpetually discouraged and defeated in their life.

Satan robs us of our freedom in Christ, which God intends for us to relish. Satan's whole mission is to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). Yet, Christ offers us His hope and joy in this life and for all of eternity (1 Corinthians 15:19).

We place our faith in the sacrificial atonement of Jesus for our sins, receive His forgiveness, and walk in new life. Everything changes for our good, even if our circumstances are a heavy burden.

Yoked to Jesus, we have help to carry our problems, and He eventually works them all out for our good (Romans 8:28). God uses trials to move us into the center of His will, to strengthen us for life's inevitable tribulation in our future, and to prove to us His unending love and provision for our life.

It is hard for the unbeliever to imagine that God's plan for them is better than the sensual pleasures and tangible possessions of this world. They do not realize that, in the larger scheme of things, life is as vanishing as a warm breath on a cold morning (James 4:14).

They do not take into consideration that eternity lasts forever (2 Corinthians 4:18), and we only have one chance to believe in Christ or to condemn our self to hell for eternity (John 3:16-18).

Prayer:
Father God, You free us from the condemnation of our past, the fear of the future and the uncertainty of life on this earth. Keep our mind off our current circumstances and focused on the joy You set before us each moment of the day - a stranger's smile, a bird's song, the giggles of little children, a sunny day, a gentle rain, a beautiful landscape of plant-life, a sunset, lake or stream.

Help us not to miss the true joy, success and peace which comes through having Christ residing within us by Your Holy Spirit. Remind us that any heavy cross we experience in life on this sin-cursed globe is easier and lighter when we are yoked with Christ, because He aids us in carrying the burden.

Thought for the Day:
If we view life from the context of eternity, we gain a greater hope and fulfillment though living it for Christ; He abides within us and helps us to carry our burdens here on earth with more serenity and contentment, and to enjoy eternity with Him in abundance  and peace. - 1 Corinthians 15:19

The Miracle of Prayer

Prayer is communication between God and His people. The Bible encourages us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). We do not need a kneeling position in order to pray. We can pray throughout every activity of our day.

When we do, we find that we are communicating with God's Spirit on the best way to perform the task at hand. We walk in the Spirit rather than in the flesh, and we find our self in the center of God's will all day long.

Miracles happen when we pray. Joshua prayed for the sun to stand still so the Israelites could win the battle, and God did just that. Gideon prayed for the animal skin to be wet and then dry, and God used that prayer to confirm His call on Gideon's life.

Daniel prayed and the angel Gabriel appeared in less than three minutes as an answer to that prayer. But another time Daniel prayed, and due to spiritual warfare, it took weeks before the angel was able to deliver his answer (Daniel 10:12).

Satan attempts to hinder the answers to our prayers; but Matthew reminds us that everyone who asks receives, those who seek will find; and if we knock, God will open every door that we need in order to perform His will for our life (Matthew 7:8).

God always answers prayers, even if His answer is "wait" or "no"; and we can be assured that His answer has our best interest at heart. With faith in God's faithfulness, nothing can stop us from accomplishing God's will for our life.

Prayer:
Father God, remind us that when we build our life on the rock of Christ, no storm shall prevail against us. We know that even if our enemies fight against us, or if Satan turns out all the demons of hell to stop us, greater is Christ within us than the god of this world (1 John 4:4). You have a perfect plan for our life, and we flourish with success and fulfillment as we walk in Your will (Ephesians 2:10).

We may fight a formidable enemy; but You triumph in every instance by making us overcomers who enjoy the victory of a life spent in Your presence, regardless of where we live or the circumstances around us. Remind us to pray without ceasing and to stand still and wait on Your salvation (Exodus 14:13).

Thought for the Day:
Prayer is not therapy for the soul, but a connection of our spirit to the Spirit of God; prayer transcends human power, wisdom and ability and moves mountains in the spiritual world, and if necessary, in the physical world as well.
