Praying God’s Word

Sometimes, we feel a burden on our heart, but we do not know how to pray. Jesus gave us a format for prayer (Matthew 6:9-13), and the Psalmists give us a perfect example of how to pray. In fact, we can use Biblical verses to craft our prayers. They are anointed words that pertain to us even in today’s world.

For instance, Colossians 1:3-7 makes a beautiful prayer of dependence on God and our continual worship of Him:

“Father God, (3) we always appreciate who you are and what You do for us. We are thrilled that You are the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and we are Your adopted children as well. (4) We pray to You by faith in the Lord Jesus through the love He exhibited for all Your people. (5) We heard about this love through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank You for the faith and love that spring up in our heart through the hope that You store up for us in Heaven.

(“6) This Gospel bears fruit in our life because Jesus died for us and the entire world. Help us to spread this truth in our family, circle of friends, and community just as it was by those inspired to originally write these words. Help us to truly understand Your grace toward us. (7) We hear your truth through the preachers and teachers that You plant among us. Their faithful ministry to us shares with us the truth about Your love for us by Your Spirit. Amen.”

Praying Bible verses inspires us to walk in God’s ways and to trust Him with our whole heart. Another Biblically based prayer is found in one of Jesus’ prayers while He lived on this earth:

“Father God, My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in me and I am in You. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that You have sent me.

“I give them the glory that You gave Me, so that we may be one as You and I are one— I in them and You in Me — so that we may be brought to complete unity as one Body. Then the world will know that You sent Me and have loved them, even as You have loved Me” (John 17: 20-23).”

Thoughts for the Day:

Large portions of scripture flow together in poetic prose. They make beautiful passages that we can pray with the anointing of God. He placed His inspired words throughout the originally inscribed words of His truth in both the Old and New Testament. Psalms is an example of the Psalmists recording their prayer songs that came from their heart to God’s ears.
