Unmet Expectations

body of water in golden hour background

As we grow up, we dream of unforeseen realities and expectations for our future. Some of them are inspired by our childhood fantasies, and some of them are actual possibilities that we pursue in high school, and through vocational choices and college.

In adulthood, we assume that our life will flow according to these plans, to follow our anticipated schedule, and to meet our every expectation. When we face our first major crisis, we are shaken to the core, and the blinders fall off our eyes as we view life as it really is.

We never expected so much distress, and we are overcome by these new challenges. Our life dared to deviate from our well-laid plans, and we struggle with bitterness and anger along with our disillusionment. Our joy, peace and contentment seem like distant memories.

We act like a thermometer rather than a thermostat, registering this new status-quo and giving up our courage, determination and desire to be the change that makes a difference in our world. We wallow in our self-pity until we realize our need of a savior.

We need Jesus to calm our fears, smooth our ruffled feathers, and to provide us with meaning and true direction for our life. However, only total surrender to and trust in our Heavenly Father will turn our life around for our good (Romans 8:28).

A new life in Christ is a great adventure (2 Corinthians 5:17). Our former expectations pass away, and everything is new and exciting (Ecclesiastes 3:11). He takes control of our life, and we learn to trust His future plans for us (Ephesians 2:10).

Prayer:
Father God, thank you for anchoring our soul through the storms of life. Your peace transcends our circumstances and nothing in this world troubles us when we keep our thoughts fixed on You (Isaiah 26:3). We find our joy and stability in Your presence in our life. You are our all, and You are in all (Ephesians 4:6). You have plans for the world and everyone in it.

We want to be a vital part or Your strategies rather than our own, and we desire to walk in all of Your ways. Your will for each one of us is the happiest place on earth. You have our best interest in your heart and You shower us with Your blessings each and every day. We live in praise to You as we serve in Your Kingdom wherever You lead us to function.

Thought for the Day:
God's presence in us and union with us are of paramount importance to our fulfillment in this life and the next; He makes our path level (Psalm 27:11), and gives us guidance by His Spirit each and every moment of the day.
